Sumba – Beautifully Wild

Let me tell you about this magical slice of Indonesia that totally stole my heart: West Sumba. If you’re into stunning landscapes, warm-hearted people, and hidden gems that feel totally untouched, you’re going to want to add this to your travel list—stat.

We based ourselves at Maringi, a beautiful eco-resort run by the incredible Sumba Hospitality Foundation. Think gorgeous design, lush greenery, and young hospitality students running the show like total pros. The vibe was chill and inspiring, and the food? Don’t even get me started—local, fresh, and full of flavor.

First stop: Praijing Village

This traditional village is like stepping into another time. We wandered between tall thatched rooftops, greeted by friendly locals and curious kids. The architecture is fascinating, and the spiritual energy of the place is undeniable.

Floating in a dream: Waikuri Lagoon

Waikuri is one of those “is this real life?” places. Crystal-clear turquoise water surrounded by rocks and lush trees. We spent quite a bit of time swimming, floating, and soaking in the calm. It’s like Mother Nature’s private spa.

Pantai Watubela: beach goals

I mean… just look at that view. Wild waves, golden sand, and not a soul in sight. Perfect for barefoot walks, shell hunting, and daydreaming. And, of course, landscape photography.

Weemanemba Lagoon: hidden treasure

This one’s a bit of a mission to reach—but so worth it. Remote, peaceful, and ridiculously photogenic. We had the whole place to ourselves, which made it feel even more magical.

Totok Kalada Village: heart & heritage

Though we couldn’t take any photos here out of respect for local customs, the memories are etched deep in my mind. Totok Kalada welcomed us with quiet warmth and a strong sense of tradition. Walking through the village felt like entering a sacred space—rich in culture, ritual, and community. Sometimes, the most powerful moments are the ones you carry in your heart, not on your camera roll.

Chasing light at Lendonagara Hills

Sunset here? Pure poetry. Rolling hills, dramatic skies, and golden light that made everything look like a movie. I could’ve stayed forever.

Wee Kacura Waterfall: Breathtaking!

As we walked through the rice fields and got closer to the waterfall, we became quieter and quieter. We just couldn’t believe what was right in front of us. To this day, Wee Kacura has been, hands down, the most beautiful place we’ve ever visited! A must when visiting Sumba!

This waterfall isn’t huge, but it’s tucked into such a lush little corner of paradise that it felt like discovering a secret garden. Bring water shoes and go for an unforgettable swim!

Karaja Sumba weaving community: threads of tradition

We visited this amazing collective of women who keep the art of ikat weaving alive. Their skill and patience blew me away. Each piece tells a story—it’s wearable art, rich in culture and meaning. Of course, I had to bring a piece home.
